2021 Bundestag Election: 60.4 million people entitled to vote
WIESBADEN – According to an estimate of the Federal Statistical Office, about 60.4 million Germans living in the territory of the Federal Republic of Germany will be entitled to vote in the 20th election to the German Bundestag on 26 September 2021, 31.2 million women and 29.2 million men. The Federal Returning Officer also reports that the number of people entitled to vote is expected to be smaller than in the 2017 Bundestag Election when it amounted to 61.7 million.
The decline is due to the demographic development. The number of Germans who have died since 2017 exceeds the number of Germans who have reached the age of majority and thus voting age. Fewer people under 30 years and fewer people between 40 and 59 will therefore be entitled to vote in the 2021 Bundestag Election than in 2017. In contrast, it is expected that more people aged 60 to 69 (baby boomer generation) and 30 to 39 years (children of the baby boomers) will be eligible to vote.
There will be approximately 2.8 million first-time voters, which account for 4.6 % of all people entitled to vote. All young Germans who reached the age of majority since the 2017 Bundestag Election are first-time voters.
