Repeat of the 2021 Bundestag election: press service offered by the Federal Returning Officer and establishment of the provisional election result

WIESBADEN/BERLIN – The Federal Returning Officer will offer a comprehensive press service for the media on 11 February 2024, the day when the repeat of the 2021 Bundestag election will be held. On election day, the Federal Returning Officer’s team will be in the German Bundestag in Berlin until the announcement of the official provisional result. The Federal Returning Officer will make her official announcements in the “West Lobby" on the Plenary Chamber floor and be available for interviews, if requested. We kindly ask you to submit any requests for interviews to the Press Office of the Federal Returning Officer by noon on 9 February 2024 (pressestelle@bundeswahlleiter.de).

Visit to polling stations

The Federal Returning Officer, Ruth Brand, and the Land Returning Officer of Berlin, Stephan Bröchler, will visit two polling stations on election day:

  • at 9:30 a.m.: polling station 03323 in the Carl-von-Ossietzky-Gymnasium, Görschstraße 42-44, 13187 Berlin. Media admission is at 9:15 a.m.
  • at 10:30 a.m.: polling station 107 (floor 1, room 1 12), Linienstr. 162, 10115 Berlin. Media admission is at 10:15 a.m.

Journalists wishing to attend the visit to both polling stations are asked to register with the Press Office of the Federal Returning Officer (pressestelle@bundeswahlleiter.de), stating their surname, first name, date of birth, place of birth and the media outlet they represent.

Announcement of provisional election result

Federal Returning Officer Ruth Brand is expected to announce the provisional election result in the early morning of 12 February 2024 in the West Lobby on the Plenary Chamber floor of the German Bundestag (Reichstag building). A prior information notice with the exact time of the announcement will be issued around one hour beforehand.

All press releases of the Federal Returning Officer will be disseminated in the usual manner via www.bundeswahlleiterin.de, e-mail, ots service and via @Wahlleitung_de on social media platforms “X” and “Instagram”. 

Bundestag press accreditation required for on-site attendance

N.B.: Media representatives require valid accreditation to be admitted to the German Bundestag. You can apply to the Press Unit of the Bundestag for accreditation (www.bundestag.de/presse/akkreditierung/). Access for the announcement of the provisional result will only be possible once the prior information notice has been issued and is exclusively via the entrance to the Jakob Kaiser Building (Dorotheenstraße 100).

Open data offerings of the Federal Returning Officer

The Federal Returning Officer will additionally offer all current results in xml and csv format for download by the media, researchers and interested users (https://www.bundeswahlleiterin.de/bundestagswahlen/2021/ergebnisse/opendata.html). These open data can be used for further machine processing.

The results regarding all constituency nominations and Land lists will be published from the constituency level onwards. In the course of the election night, the full constituency results will be released live from Berlin once counting is completed.
