Distribution of seats in the German Bundestag

Following the repeat election, there will be 735 seats in the Bundestag (2021 main election: 736, 2017 Bundestag election: 709), one less than after the main election in 2021. Compared with the provisional result of 12 February 2024, there are no changes to the distribution of seats. This means that the FDP definitively loses one seat in Berlin. The SPD loses one seat in Berlin and wins one seat in Niedersachsen. The GRÜNEN lose one seat in Berlin and win one seat in Nordrhein-Westfalen. DIE LINKE loses one seat in Berlin and wins one seat in Hessen.

Based on the final election result, which takes account of the repeat election, the political parties indicated below will have the following number of seats in the 20th German Bundestag:

Party Seats according to calculation of seats after

When establishing which Land list candidates are elected, it was decided, following a resolution of the Federal Electoral Committee, to identify the cases outside Berlin in which a seat was vacated and filled by a successor from the list in the period up to the repeat election.

On the other hand, any resignations of party membership or change of party that took place after the admission of the candidates do not affect the establishment of the results by the Federal Electoral Committee and were not explicitly identified. This is also the case if an individual left a party or switched to another party after the repeat election but before the attainment of Bundestag membership. The individuals concerned have been declared as elected for the parties for which they ran.

The final results and the final distribution of seats in the election to the 20th German Bundestag for Germany as a whole, the Länder and the individual constituencies are available on the website of the Federal Returning Officer (www.bundeswahlleiterin.de). The “Endgültige Ergebnisse nach Wahlkreisen” publication of the Federal Returning Officer, detailing the final results by constituencies, is also available for download from the website (PDF format).

Decision of the Council of Elders

The Federal Elections Act stipulates that the Council of Elders of the German Bundestag must decide on the loss of membership of the Bundestag immediately after the session of the Federal Electoral Committee. The representatives concerned will leave the Bundestag with the decision of the Council of Elders.
