2021 Bundestag Election: share of postal voters at 47.3 %

WIESBADEN/BERLIN – The share of postal voters rose to 47.3 % in the Bundestag election of 26 September 2021. In the Bundestag election of 2017, postal voters still accounted for only 28.6 % of voter turnout. “The growing tendency to vote by post, which was observed in the elections to the Länder parliaments in spring, has continued in the Bundestag election,“ says Federal Returning Officer Georg Thiel. “The proportion of postal voters in Bundestag elections has gone up continuously since 1957 but there has never been an increase of as much as 18.7 percent.” At 62.4 %, Bayern had the highest share of postal voters, and Thüringen had the lowest with 32.4 %.
