2025 Bundestag election: Some 675,000 poll workers assisting in the election process
WIESBADEN – In the election to the 21st German Bundestag, which will be held on 23 February 2025, roughly 675,000 poll workers will help ensure the proper conduct of the election. The Federal Returning Officer expresses her sincere thanks to all volunteer poll workers on the electoral boards who are doing a service to our democracy.
The Federal Returning Officer also reports that there will be approximately 90,000 polling districts for ballot box and postal voting in the coming Bundestag election. The municipalities draw the boundaries of the polling districts to make it as easy as possible for voters to get to the polling stations. There is an electoral board in every polling station and for every postal voting district. Such a board consists of an electoral officer, his or her deputy and three to seven assessors. Some cities require up to 10,000 poll workers to conduct the Bundestag election.
The electoral board organises and supervises the proper conduct of the election. Where necessary, the board explains the election regulations to the citizens. Once the polling station has closed, the electoral board counts the votes and reports the result to the municipal authority. The municipal authority aggregates the results of all polling districts of the municipality and reports the result to the constituency returning officer. The constituency returning officer determines the provisional election result for the constituency from the first releases and reports this result to the Land returning officer. The Land returning officer, in turn, reports incoming constituency results to the Federal Returning Officer on a rolling basis. The Federal Returning Officer determines the provisional election result for all of Germany from these figures.
The tasks of poll workers are illustrated by three videos on the website of the Federal Returning Officer. The videos provide information on the electoral board, the procedures on election day, the count of votes and the documentation work.
