64.4 million persons entitled to vote in Germany

WIESBADEN – According to a first estimate by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), about 64.4 million Germans and other Union citizens will be entitled to vote in Germany in the eighth direct elections to the European Parliament on 25 May 2014, 33.1 million women and almost 31.2 million men.

Germany will be represented in the European Parliament by 96 members. The total number of members of the European Parliament will decrease from currently 766 to the maximum number of 751 laid down in the Lisbon Treaty.

Approximately 61.4 million Germans will be entitled to vote in the elections of the members of the European Parliament from the Federal Republic of Germany. In addition, about 2.9 million other Union citizens will be entitled to participate in the elections, namely citizens of other European Union member states who are resident in the Federal Republic of Germany. They can decide whether to exercise their right to vote in the European elections in Germany or in their home member state. Just as the German voters, they must fulfil the legal requirements for voting in Germany according to the European Elections Act. Special rules for enrolment in the registers of voters apply to non-German European Union citizens who live in Germany. For further information please refer to the website of the Federal Returning Officer at www.bundeswahlleiter.de.

There are about 5.2 million young voters who may participate for the first time in the elections of the members of the European Parliament from the Federal Republic of Germany. Among them are approximately 4.7 million female (2.3 million) and male (2.4 million) German first-time voters born in the period from 8 June 1991 to 25 May 1996, around 0.3 million other male Union citizens and 0.2 million other female Union citizens.
