Majorities

There are different provisions concerning the type of majority on the basis of which a result is obtained in elections and votes:

  • Simple majority:

The majority of the votes cast suffices, abstentions are not counted.

  • Absolute majority:

The result of the vote has to be higher than half of the total number of persons entitled to vote.

  • Simple two-thirds majority:

Two thirds of the votes cast, that is of the votes present, are required. Abstentions are not counted.

  • Absolute two-thirds majority:

Two thirds of those entitled to vote are the absolute two-thirds majority.
